Ashley Novak, Girls on the Run of Volusia County Council Director.

Ashley is an involved community organizer and volunteer. Most recently, she served as the English Teacher at PACE Center for Girls-Volusia, a strength-based, gender-specific, school for girls in grades 6-12. She has an extensive background in professional and volunteer experiences including working for APD (Agency for People with Disabilities), Director of a Teen Maternity Home (Davenport, Iowa), Disability Services Advocate at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, founder of Adopt-A-School Program, a partnership between FUMC-Port Orange and Sugar Mill Elementary School and founder of “Helping Hawks Thrive”, a food pantry partnership between Thrive Community Church and Spruce Creek High School. She continues to be an enthusiastic and engaged community volunteer for several organizations within the Volusia County area. Ashley is passionate about fundraising; developing new programs; recruiting and training volunteers that are committed to improving the lives of children in her community. Ashley is a graduate of Elon University (NC) and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Ashley and her husband, Michael, have two college aged daughters who have recently “flown the nest.” She has run countless 5k’s and has been involved with the Galloway Group, Daytona running her first and only half marathon Feb. 2014 (Run Donna/Jacksonville). Ashley is thrilled to be involved with Girls on the Run because she believes inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident can change the world.

Debye Gotsch, Girls on the Run of Volusia County Board Member and Immediate Past Council Director.

Debye has been involved as a GOTR volunteer and coach since 2008. She has been on the board since becoming Council Director in 2012. She started coaching after observing her own children struggle with the very elements Girls on the Run discusses. Debye comes with a background in aviation training and customer service. In addition to her professional experience, Debye has completed two marathons with Team in Training, a half marathon and many local road races. She loves the energy of the girls, their excitement on race day and watching them learn life skills that will be very useful in the coming years and throughout their lives.

Karen Weiss, Ph.D., Girls on the Run of Volusia County Board Chairperson.

Dr. Weiss is a retired clinical psychologist and former adjunct professor at Stetson University. In her practice, she specialized in families and children, so has professional expertise in child development and helping at-risk children. Karen is a Past President of the Rotary Club of DeLand and has held many offices with the Rotary District of Northeast Florida, including
Area Governor. She has been involved with Girls on the Run of Volusia County since its inception in 2005 after meeting Molly Barker, the founder of Girls on the Run International. In addition to being Board Chair, she is the treasurer and bookkeeper. She loves how the program empowers young girls.

Kathy Steen, Co-Founder of Girls on the Run of Volusia County and Girls on the Run of Volusia County Board Member.

After team-training for and completing a transformative Sprint Triathlon in May 2005, Kathy heard about GOTR for the first time. She was immediately drawn to it, having just experienced the power of team and physical accomplishment, and by July of that year, she and another woman had been to the national training and started our Single-Site Council. The next year they transitioned to a multi-site Council and have never looked back. Kathy served as Council Director for seven years. She coordinates our LUNAFEST events. She believes in the mission of GOTR and the powerful impact it has on young girls. With a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling, as well as work experience in both fields, she fully understands the importance and long-term benefits of this program. She loves telling people that GOTRI has served over a million girls to date. She says, “We are indeed a “movement!”

Matt Coleman, Girls on the Run of Volusia County Board Member.

Matt has been a teacher at Pathways Elementary School in Ormond Beach for 17 years. He also has worked as a Youth Coordinator for the United Way, a Senior Youth Counselor for the Boys & Girls Club of Volusia/Flagler Counties, a Youth Director at Christ Presbyterian Church, a volunteer soccer coach for 17 years at Ormond Beach Soccer Club, a member of the City of Ormond Beach Human Resources Advisory Board, a former member of the City of Ormond Beach Quality of Life Board, and a longtime volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. He has run countless marathons, has involved his daughters in running, and enjoys working with children. He has been an integral part of the Board since 2013, by providing many new ideas on communication and marketing. He emcees our 5ks and does an excellent job of raffling items at our LUNAFEST event. He enjoys organizing events, but enjoys working the “day of” the events even more. He has a boundless amount of energy and likes using it to help worthwhile endeavors. Being a male teacher, he brings a unique perspective to the Girls on The Run Board of Directors.

Karen Keller, Girls on the Run of Volusia County Board Member.

Karen has a Bachelors Degree in Mathematics from Oklahoma State University and a Masters Degree in Mathematics from University of Oklahoma. She taught mathematics at the high school level, including advanced mathematics, and developed teaching materials as part of a federally-funded program for under-achieving students. She worked for Control Data Corporation in their time-sharing computing division (the original cloud computing) in systems support, sales and sales support, product management, and sales management. Karen was responsible for planning, implementing, and following-up on customer installations, new account sales, new product introduction, sales support seminars, and customer education. She also worked for Texas Instruments as sales support for Portfolio Management and Accounting software, sold to large insurance companies, state governments, and banks. She was responsible for development of materials used to support sales people and workshops to demonstrate prospect use of software, and participated in sales calls. She was co-owner and chef of a country inn in Chelsea, Vermont. Now retired, she is involved with P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) whose mission is to educate women, motivate them to achieve their potential, and celebrate their lives. She was Treasurer of a local chapter for six years, was responsible for production of the annual yearbook, provided technical support, developed materials used for new member education, was chairman of the Program for Continuing Education, and did fundraising for scholarships and grants. She has been on the Board of Girls on The Run of Volusia County since 2015. She helps with LUNAFEST, 5ks, site visits, sponsors, and social media She is our volunteer coordinator. She brings many skills and new ideas to the Board and is excited to be involved with another program that helps girls and women.

Megan White, Girls on the Run of Volusia County Board Member.

Megan has been a teacher for six years, with a Masters in Reading Education from Stetson University. She recently joined the Girls on the Run Board to use her teaching and fundraising skills as a way to contribute to the continued work the organization does to develop strong girls, both in personality and in spirit. She has participated in the coaches training. She helps with our 5ks and LUNAFEST. She brings a new and refreshing energy to the Board.

Jamie Graveling, Girls on the Run of Volusia County Board Member.

Jamie is a Media Specialist at an elementary school and has been an educator with Volusia County Schools since 2007. She is currently in graduate school for a Masters in Library and Information Science. She has been involved with GOTR since 2010 and has coached 4 seasons of GOTR, 2 seasons of Heart and Sole, and volunteered at numerous 5K events. She has also attended our LUNAFEST events. She recently joined the Board in 2016 bringing her perspective as a teacher and a coach. She has energized the Board with her presentations of many wonderful ideas using her knowledge of coaching and the program.

Anna Reese, Girls on the Run of Volusia County Board Member.

 Anna is an instructional designer, coach, retired military wife and mother of two. Thanks to the U.S. Air Force she has had the opportunity to live in the Far East, Europe, and several states in the U.S. She has always had a passion for children and sports. She has coached church youth group basketball and volleyball as well as at the middle school and high school level. She truly believes there are so many life lessons to be learned by participating on teams and in sports. As a military spouse and mother, she has organized several fund raising events to support military families and her children’s activities.  Now that Anna’s children are off to college, she looks forward to helping young girls feel empowered through the professionally designed Girls on the Run curriculum and the joy of running.

Deborah Heeter, Girls on the Run of Volusia County Board Member.

Deborah has over twenty years’ corporate experience in the telecommunications Industry.  She is currently a purchasing manager for a Fortune 200 kidney dialysis laboratory.  Deborah has an MBA in Technology Management.  She has served on the boards for Little League baseball and Special Olympics, as well as volunteered in many community activities.  Deborah enjoys running half-marathons, 10K and 5K races.    She is supported by her husband, adult son and golden retriever.  It is Deborah’s desire to pay back the strength and confidence she received growing up in  support of the young girls in the community.
